PAGE 130 Water Directory 2013 Department of Sustainability and Environment Victoria's Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) leads the Victorian Government's efforts to sustainably manage water resources and catchments, climate change, bushfires, parks and other public land, forests, biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. Water Resource Management DSE, in partnership with water corporations and Catchment Management Authorities, is responsible for managing Victoria's water resources to meet urban, rural and environmental needs, now and into the future. In pursuing this outcome, DSE works to achieve the following: • Improved efficiency of supply and use of water in cities and towns to improve liveability; • A more productive, efficient and sustainable irrigation industry supported by improved irrigation infrastructure; • A transition strategy for the Basin Plan that balances social, economic and environmental needs; • Improved environmental condition of waterways supporting community needs; • Improved governance arrangements for a high performing and efficient water sector; • Improved capacity to respond and adapt to a variable climate. In meeting the above objectives, the tasks and responsibilities of DSE include: • Providing informed policy advice to Government; • Overseeing the performance of the State's water authorities; • Developing and implementing policy, programs and institutional and legislative frameworks; • Providing project oversight and advice on major infrastructure projects; and • Representing Victoria's interests in intergovernmental water policy and program obligations.
